Thinking about hearing aids for Mom or Dad? 5 things to know first

You notice it at dinner. Dad nods along but misses the punchline. Mom has the TV loud enough to hear from the kitchen. If you've been wondering whether to bring it up, here's what's changed and what to look for.

  1. They don't need an appointment to buy one anymore

Since October 2022, adults 18+ with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss can buy an FDA-category OTC hearing aid without an exam or prescription. That removes the biggest excuse: "I'll make an appointment someday."

  2. It's not for everyone, and that's OK

If they have ear pain, sudden or one-sided hearing loss, dizziness, or can't follow speech even when it's loud and close, a doctor or hearing professional is the right first step. Our 60-second fit check walks through this.

  3. Simple matters more than features

Look for ear tips in several sizes, a volume control they can feel, and a printed guide. You may end up being the one who helps set it up, so pick something you can explain over the phone.

  4. Check the return window before you buy

Hearing aids take a few weeks to get used to. Make sure there's enough time to try them, and read who pays for return shipping. HEARVELA One has 60-day returns and a 12-month warranty.

  5. The price shouldn't be a guessing game

Prescription hearing aids often cost several thousand dollars a pair, usually including professional services. HEARVELA One is $129 per pair (expected launch price) with free tracked shipping. One price, no "was" price.

Who OTC hearing aids are (and aren't) for

OTC hearing aids are intended for adults 18 and older with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. They are not intended for severe or profound hearing loss, and they are not for children.

See a doctor, preferably an ear specialist, before using a hearing aid if you have:

  • A visible deformity of the ear, from birth or injury
  • Fluid, pus or blood coming out of the ear in the past 6 months
  • Pain or discomfort in the ear
  • A history of excessive earwax, or you suspect something is in your ear canal
  • Episodes of vertigo or severe dizziness
  • Sudden, quickly worsening or fluctuating hearing loss in the past 6 months
  • Hearing loss or ringing (tinnitus) in only one ear, or a noticeable difference between ears

Sudden hearing loss can be a medical emergency. If you notice it, contact a doctor right away. A hearing aid will not restore normal hearing or prevent hearing loss. Read the full OTC hearing aid information.
